For this gut-renovation of an existing wood-frame row house on Guernsey Street, the team found creative ways to stay within the limited budget, incorporating reclaimed elements with off-the-shelf items to create a raw yet elegant aesthetic. Materials include rough timber, sliding barn doors, steel, copper piping, subway tile, and plywood, much of which was salvaged from the Metropolitan Exchange building in Brooklyn. Some design elements, such as plywood boxes on casters for concealed toy storage, were custom-fabricated and assembled on site. The combination of vintage, industrial, and modern materials gives a sense of place appropriate to the project’s Brooklyn context.
